Above, the Pearses Hurling Team in San Francisco (in a photo dated
1916), which was formed sometime after the execution of Padraig
Pearse (May 3rd, 1916). Many GAA teams across America were named
(and still are) after prominent Irish Nationalist leaders. |

local newspapers in the city carried the team sheets for upcoming
games-Here is one from the Call Bulletin for game between the O'Connells
and the Young Irelands. |

San Francisco Call Bulletin-Mar 18, 1903-recounts the St. Patricks
Day sporting activities among the Irish. In the year 1900, 25% of
the population in San Francisco was Irish. |

During the early part of the 20th Century, many of the local Gaelic
club teams in San Francisco were named after Irish Nationalist leaders.
Above is one example "O'Connells" club named after Daniel
O'Connell. (Call Bulletin-1908).
Another club team called The O'Growneys, named after one of the
Gaelic League founders-Fr. Eugene O'Growney-(who died at age 36
in California from Tuberculosis) played locally around 1915. |

San Francisco All-Stars 1958 at the KRB Hall 1133 Mission Street, San
Francisco. (The KRB Hall burned down after a fire at the building in Dec
