San Francisco Call Bulletin-Mar 18, 1903-recounts the St. Patricks Day sporting activities among the Irish. In the year 1900, 25% of the population in San Francisco was Irish.

During the early part of the 20th Century, many of the local Gaelic club teams in San Francisco were named after Irish Nationalist leaders. Above is one example "O'Connells" club named after Daniel O'Connell. (Call Bulletin-1908).

Another club team called The O'Growneys, named after one of the Gaelic League founders-Fr. Eugene O'Growney-(who died at age 36 in California from Tuberculosis) played locally around 1915.
