The 2006 GAA North American Convention took place at the Irish
Cultural Center in Boston last month at the end of a long and dramatic
year for the association. Following the mud-drenched playoffs in
Philadelphia and much wrangling over a disciplinary matter arising
from them, the NACB was ready for a change and an injection of new
blood.

On
a weekend when Hurricane/Tropical storm Ernesto swept through Philadelphia
the resilience of our players and organizers came shining through.
A persistent downpour for almost 24 hours on Friday and Saturday
with strong winds to boot, rendered conditions unlike any this reporter
has ever witnessed.
Indeed were it not for the fact that teams had
traveled up to 3000 miles this competition would not have been finished.
Great credit is due to all players who served up some enthralling
contests against all the odds. In the end the unbreakable spirit
of The Gael won through against all the odds.

The
Giants' baseball game against the Arizona Diamondbacks took place
on Irish Heritage Night at AT&T Park on August 21st 2006. The
event had the usual compliment of Irish Dancers from the Whelan
Academy of Irish Dance, the hat give-aways, and other entertainment.
A new addition to this year's repertoire was an unusual twist on
the ceremonial first pitch. The GAA's North American PRO Eamonn
Gormley did the honors, but with a new approach to this long-standing
baseball tradition. He used a sliothar instead of a baseball, and
instead of throwing it in the usual pitch, he used a hurley to puck
the ball in at the catcher!

The
ladies footballers of San Diego Na Fianna and the Seattle Gaels
converged on San Francisco's Boxer Stadium on Saturday July 29th
for an action-packed day of rapid-fire football in short games running
from morning to sunset. Full

The GAA Western Division Board's Annual General
Meeting on Sunday February 26th saw the return of many familiar
faces to the board. Returned to the Chair was Malachy Higgins with
Liam Moloney coming back for another year as Vice Chair. Frankie
Keenan remains Secretary with Joe Duffy as Assistant Secretary.
Anne O'Donohue has taken on the role of Registrar, and joining the
board is Carmel Murray as Treasurer. Eamonn Gormley remains Public
Relations Officer, and a new face on the board is Seamus Collins,
the new Youth Officer.
The 2006 playing season is expected to begin as usual in April
with the St Patrick's Cup, a warmup tournament that gets the local
clubs into gear and up to speed before the start of the Championship
in June. |
