Young Irelanders signal their intent
Young Irelanders 1-16
Ulster 1-13
The Young Irelanders continue to silence their critics following this
merited three point win over the Ulster’s second team last Sunday.
Gavin Macken was the difference between the sides as his experience was
put to good use in the Y. I. half forward line. Macken (1-2) had an excellent
game all afternoon and he was central to what the Y.I.’s did well
on the day as time and time again he released Colin Harte (0-7) and Enda
Earls (0-5) to shoot over points from all angles. The Ulster just could
not contain Macken or the free scoring forwards around him. P.J. Parr
had the other two points to round out the Y.I. scoring. Fergal McMahon
was once again the chief scorer for Ulster as he had 6 points during the
game. Ryan Cauley helped along the way with 3 points while Paul Harman
(1-1), Mike Collins (0-1), Cahir McHugh (0-1), and Colm Doherty (0-1)
completed the scoring list for Ulster.
Ulster almost snatched a draw at the end of the game as a goal bound shot
was pushed onto the upright by Brian Curren the Y.I. goalkeeper and away
to safety. Ulster will need to get a few wins to progress in this years
championship. Ulster will also have to improve from placed ball situations
as time and time again within scoring range last Sunday the ball drifted
wide of the posts and those wides cost them in the end.
Teams and Scorers:
Young Irelanders: Brain Curren, Muiris Poole, Fiachra
McCarron, Liam Rabitt, David Broderick, Seamus Moore, Dara Madden, Colin
Harte (0-7), Enda Earls (0-5), Gavin Macken (1-2), PJ Parr (0-2), Kevin
Moylan, Jim Materson. Subs: Ray Sexton.
Ulster: Emmit Minagh, Dermot McWilliams, Terry Keenan,
Michael McGlone, Brendan McCafferty, Colm Doherty (0-1), Michael Collins
(0-1), Mike English, Cahir McHugh (0-1), Fergal McMahon (0-6), Gary Foley,
Paul Harmon (1-1), Ryan Cauley (0-3). Subs: Kevin Grimley, Decaln Rafferty,
Kieran Rafferty, Pauric Daly.

Ulster now hot favorites for the Senior C'ship
Ulster 5-13
Shannon Rangers 0-06
Ulster ran the Shannon Rangers ragged as the score line indicates in this
Senior football clash last Sunday at Balboa Stadium. The Rangers squad
was severely depleted with a host of injuries to many of their regulars
but Ulster did not show any mercy in their approach to this fixture. Ulster
had the game well and truly wrapped up by half time as they had 4 goals
in the bag at that stage. John Healy kept his cool in front of goals as
he scored two net busters in the opening half after excellent approach
work by the Ulster forward line. Healy gave Brendan Caldwell in the Rangers
goal no chance on either goal effort. Eamonn Burns easily slotted a goal
past Caldwell after a poor kick out while the explosive Sean McCannn also
ran in for a goal just before halftime.
Ulster took their leg of the peddle and decided to shoot from distance
which resulted in some well taken long range points from Maurice O’Connell
in particular and Austin McKenna.
This is game the Rangers will want to forget in a hurry as they now face
with the possibility of relegation from top flight football next season
after losing their opening two games in this years Senior championship.
Ben Niland and Mike Meehan were the only bright spots for Rangers on the
day as they played their heart out right up to the final whistle. On the
face of this result Ulster will fancy their chances of winning this years
Senior title in the city, if this performance is any indication of what
lies ahead in August for would be title holders.
Teams and Scorers:
Ulster: Fergal Clancy, Sean O’Neill, Thomas Neeson, Killian
Feeley, Ross McKenna, Padraig Shanahan (0-2), Maurice O’Connell
(0-3), John Healy (2-0), Austin McKenna (0-2), James Downes (0-1), Eamon
Burns (1-2), Sean McCann (2-1), Declan McAuley (0-2).
Shannon Rangers: Brendan Caldwell, Martin Crean, Benny
Niland (0-2), Tim O’Gorman, Ronan O’Connor, Neilly Brosnan,
Paul Cuffey, Mark O’Connor (0-1), Eoin O’Sullivan, Eamonn
O’Keffee, Pat Tracy (0-1), Gilbert O’Sullivan (0-2), Mike
Meehan. Subs: Gary Canteny, Mossy O’Connor, Aodh O’Neill.

Boru secure second win on the trot
St. Brendans 1-09
Sons of Boru 0-14
Sons of Boru continued their good start to the junior championship with
a two point win over the Brendans last Sunday afternoon at Balboa Stadium.
This was an evenly contested game as Boru forwards Rich Brown and Pat
McGee were closely guarded and were not given the freedom they got against
the Celts two weeks ago. Ronan Lennon had the Brendans goal in the first
half to keep the contest close into the second half. Brian Guiney led
the scoring for the Boru with four points. Liam Poff had three fine points
during the game from the half back position. Deadly duo Brown and McGee
scored only a point between them all afternoon. For the Brendans Aidan
O’Sullivan, Tom Carroll, John Dineen, Fergal Cleary and Shane Corban
played well. Not a bad performance from the Brendans on this occasion
and as they have picked up a few players from Ireland they might in fact
be in the running for deciding the destination of this years Junior championship.
Teams and Scorers:
St. Brendans: Jeff Kumer, Shane Corban, Ronan Lennon
(1-0), Tom Caroll (0-1), Finbarr McCarthy (0-1), John McNally, Fergal
Cleary, John Dineen (0-1), Aidan O’Sullivan (0-1), Liam Cantwell
(0-2), Conor Farrell (0-1), Brian Conn, Dave O’Riordan. Subs: Tadgh
Daly, Anthony McCoy, Chad Daly (0-2).
Sons of Boru: Sean Keighran, Berty Penny, Seamus O’Donohue
(0-1), John Sheehan, Willie Reilly, Liam Poff (0-3), Tom Greaney (0-2),
Brain Guniey (0-4), Brendan Robinson (0-1), Michael Kingston (0-1), John
O’Kane, Rich Brown, Pat McGee (0-1). Sub: Jim McGuiggan.
