O’Gara leads the Cusacks to victory

Michael Cusacks 3-07
Séan Treacys 0-08

The opening match of the day saw a full strength Michael Cusacks side overcome the Séan Treacy’s by a margin of 8 points. Both sides started brightly with scoring chances on both sides before Eddie Clancy opened the Cusacks account with a well taken shot off the left boot following a pass from Ali Downey.

Early on Paul Foley and Decky O’Donnell in the Cusack’s defense were keeping close tabs on sharp shooter Ken Hyland in the Treacy’s forward division but it did not stop Hyland from opening the Treacy’s account with a minor. Seamus O’Gara added a point from play for the Cusacks before Treacy’s Howie Hughes tapped over a close range free.

The Cusacks were now beginning to find cracks in the Treacy’s defense. Good approach play by Fergus O’Sullivan saw Ali Downey break the ball to the in rushing Eddie Clancy who roofed the ball to the back of the Treacy’s net with Micheal Glennon helpless to stop the powerful shot.
Colin White and Kroal Keane responded for the Treacy’s adding a point each before half ended while Fergus O’Sullivan added two more points from play for the Cusacks. The half time score was Treacy’s 0-5 Cusacks 1-4.

Seamus O’Gara once again showed his class for the Cusacks and exploded with a personal tally of 2-1 in the second half. Ken Hyland had two points from play for the Treacy’s midway through the half before Fergus O’Sullivan and Ali Downey rounded out the scoring for the Cusacks with a point apiece. Treacy’s were denied numerous scores by Grogan, O’Donnell and Nolan in the Cusacks defense late in the game as the Treacy’s sought to get back in the game. The was almost over when a goal bound shot from Myles Fitzpatrick was deflected and saved over the bar by Mossy Offord in the Cusacks goal to end the match.

Celts hold on for first win

Celts 3-10
Ulster B 2-11

The Celts won their first game of the year against Ulster B in Round 3 of the St. Patrick’s Day cup at Beach Chalet last Sunday by two points. They almost let the win slip from them in the latter stages of the game, as Ulster never gave up the fight finishing strongly with a goal and 5 points. Fergal McMahon, Declan Rafferty, Daniel Coll, Ramsey Raher and goalkeeper Emmet McGill were the best on display for Ulster while Tony Joyce starred for the Celts along with Joey McCarthy, Michael Cotter, Dennis DeBattista. Aidan and Jimmy O’Flynn did well for the Celts.

Overall the Celts deserved the win and will be hoping to build on this success for the rest of the year as their prospects for a semi-final berth in the St. Patrick’s Day cup competition is slim and dependent on results elsewhere in the group.

Young Irelanders back to winning ways

Young Irelanders 5-6
St. Brendans 1-4

There no surprises in the third game of the day as Frank McGoverns Young Irelanders accounted for a depleted St. Brendans side. Missing a number of regular the Brendans fell behind after only 5 minutes to a goal by Ryan O’Hehir. Following their excellent start the Young Irelanders continued to score with ease and increased their tally through the speedy Seamus Moore (1-1) and the talented Martin Dean (1-1). Colin Harte (0-1) and Brian Conn (1-0) tried hard to bring the Brendans back into the match but Declan McConn stretched the Y. I’s lead with a point from play just before halftime.

On the changeover the Y.I’s pulled away from the Brendans with Colin Harte (0-2), Ryan O’Hehir (1-0), Cathal O’Neill (1-0) and Eamon Coen (0-1) all getting on the score sheet. James O’Brien (0-1) and Tom Carroll (0-2) put some respectability on the scoreline for the Brendans before the game was over.

O’Sullivan leads the way for Ború

Sons of Ború 2-17
Shannon Rangers 1-08

The Ború claimed victory number two in the St. Patrick’s Day cup last Sunday at Beach Chalet with a hard earned victory over an ever-improving Rangers side. In a hard fought first half there were only 4 points between the sides but on the change over the Ború took control and ran out easy winners in the end. T.J.O’Sullivan looks like he maybe back to his predatory best as he chipped in with (2-2) over the hour. Mick Cunningham had five points for the Ború, ably assisted by Kevin O’Reilly (0-3) and Brian Guiney (0-2) who turned in good performances.

The Rangers were well served by midfielder Aidan Morrissey (0-1), Bobby McCarty (0-1) and Ian O’Donohue (0-3). Ben Niland (0-1) well played well in defense along with Mike Meehan while brother Andy Meehan could not be faulted for the two excellent goals that were scored against him.

TJ O'Sullivan (Sons of Ború)

Rangers Gary Canteny caused a lot of problems for the Ború defense but he lacked support going forward as the rest of the team wilted in the heat of the afternoon sun. Gilbert O’Sullivan has had better games in a Rangers uniform but this is early in the season yet we should see his form improves the season progresses. The Ború look certain to qualify for the semi-finals of the Paddy’s Day Cup and based on this performance should be favorites to go all the way to retaining the Cup they won last year.

Shannon Rangers: Andy Meehan, Danny Cassidy, Mike Meehan, Timmy O’ Gorman, Vinny Kavanagh, Benny Niland (0-1), Brendan Caldwell, Aidan Morrissey (0-1), Bobby McCarthy (0-1), Gilbert O’Sullivan, Neily Brosnan, Gary Canteny (0-1), Ian O’Donohue (0-3)

Sons of Ború: Casey Handy, Mick Kenny, Andy Fogarty, Kevin Murray (0-1), Kevin O’Sullivan, Brendan Hall, Brendan Uniacke (0-1), Brian Reilly, Sean Shannon, Kevin Reilly (0-3), Mick Cunningham (0-5), T.J. O’Sullivan (2-2). Subs: Berty Penny, Brendan Robinson.
