Ulster make light work of the Brendans

All ready for action prior to last Sundays Mens Football contest at Beach Chalet Pictured left to right: Fergal Cleary (St. Brendans), Malachy Higgins and James Downes (Ulster A). Ulster won the match 4-14 to 1-01.

Ulster A 4-14
St. Brendan’s 1-01

Ulster did their scoring average the world of good against a weak St. Brendan’s outfit that were under pressure from the start. The Brendan’s did keep the score line respectable in the first half as they trailed 1-07 to 0-00. The Brendan’s ran out of steam in the second half against a more powerful Ulster A team that took advantage of the scoring opportunities that came their way. Goals from James Downes, Gary Foley, Declan Rafferty and Sean McCann in addition to points from Eugene Cudden, Killian Feely, and Sean McClone helped Ulster to their fourth win on the trot. A semi-final spot now beckons for Ulster where they will face a more stern challenge than they have had to deal with the league campaign.

Saoirse hold on for narrow win

All ready for action prior to last Sundays Mens Football contest at Beach Chalet Pictured left to right: Aisling Bryant (Fog City Harps), Declan McConn and Paula Byrne (Saoirse). Saoirse won the match 1-09 to 1-06.

Saoirse 1-09
Fog City Harps 1-06

Only a few weeks ago Saoirse well and truly beat Fog City Harps in an earlier round of the St. Patrick’s Day Cup game. Last Sunday there was a marked improvement in the Fog City Harp line-up bolstered by the return of Sharon Edgecombe at center forward. Kathleen Murray got the Saoirse off to a good start with the first of her five points from play. Sharon Edgecombe replied for Fog City with a point from long range to level matters. Tracy Lynch pointed shortly afterwards following a fine solo run to put Saoirse one ahead, Murray landed a brace of points to make it 0-04 to 0-01 before Aisling Bryant pulled one back for the harps.

Saoirse stalwart, Whitney Sutak at midfield was causing all kinds of problems for the Magpies defense with her darting, probing runs up the middle, which culminated in a fine point on 17 mins. Tracy Lynch added another shortly afterwards. Back came Fog City Harps and they had a goal 5 mins before the break from Karen Togher to leave just one between the sides. Kathleen Murray added another 1-1 before the half ended, before Mirella Webb slotted over a point for Fog City to end the first half Saoirse 1-07 to Fog City’s 1-03.

Both defenses were on top in the second half hour and scores were hard to come by. Kathleen Murray had an early point for Saoirse with Aisling Bryant replying for Fog City. Tish Campbell and Linda Woo played well in defense to keep Anne Morrissey to just one point during the game, which was Saoirses last score of the game. Lilia Danielson and Tish Campbell rounded out the scoring for the city girls to leave a goal at the end of the game between the sides. For Saoirse, Sarah O’Malley had a couple of fine saves in the goals, Christiana Clarke, Maire O’Mahony played well in defense while Tracy Lynch and Paula Byrne creating a lot of chances up front.

There are going to be some ding-dong matches between these sides when they meet during the forthcoming championship. The final of the St. Patrick’s Day Cup will be no exception when they meet in a few weeks time.

Séan Treacys hold on for narrow win
Séan Treacys 1-07
Young Irelanders 0-09

No doubt about it but this game was the match of the day last Sunday at Beach Chalet. Both teams served up a great game, which ended with the Treacys having a point to spare over the Y.I.’s. The strong wind blowing down field during this game at Beach Chalet resulted in a game with two halves. Séan Treacys had a four-point lead over the Young Irelanders at halftime with Howie Hughes accounting for four of the Treacys 5 points from placed balls. Karol Keane had the other Treacys point from play. Allan Doyle managed the Y.I.’s solitary point in the first 25 mins of play. On the changeover, the Y.I.’s began to claw their way back into the game with that man Doyler again showing the way with two excellent long-range points. Howie Hughes replied again from a placed ball to make it 0-06 to 0-03 with 14 mins to go. The Treacys found it hard to move the ball up the field against the stiff breeze, which allowed the Y.I.’s advance in numbers every time they had possession. Unfortunately the Y.I.’s failed to capitalize on the attack scoring a number of winds that cost them in the end.

Paddy Keaney introduced Myles Fitzpatrick for the Treacys with 10 mins to go and this immediately paid off as he raced through to score a fine point. Paddy White in the Y.I.’s goal made the long journey up the field to take a 45, which sailed over the bar to leave three between the sides. Alan Doyle and P.J.Parr both had a point each to bring the Y.I.’s within a point. Treacys replied against the run of play with a goal from Ken Hyland after he jinxed his way through the Y.I.’s defense to shoot past the helpless White in goal. Muiris Poole then had a point from play. With time ticking away Fiachra McCarron the towering full back who had a fine game all through the match lead his charges down the field for one last attack which resulted in a 21 yard free. McCarron himself stepped up and drove a wind assisted pile driver straight at sub keeper Moloney in the Treacys goals who brought off a great reflex save to deflect the stinging shot over the bar for a point. That was the final score of the game and the Treacys survived the late onslaught.

Val Kirwan took charge of his first Senior Hurling match in a few years when he officiated Round 1 of the St. Patricks Day Cup Hurling competition.

Val is pictured here with Declan Donnelly (Naomh Padraigs captain) on the left and and James Kenneally (Na Fianna captain) on the right before the start of the game.

All too easy for Naomh Padraig

Naomh Padraig 4-12
Na Fianna 0-05

The first hurling match of the season as the score line suggests was a rather lop sided affair as Naomh Padraig swept aside the challenge of Na Fianna. Eddie Brady led the way for the Padraigs as he netted a personal tally of 2-6 during the course of the game. Niall Kenny chipped in with 2-2 over the course of the game and looks like Senior hurling material for the forthcoming championship campaign. Declan Donnelly, Brian Flynn, and John Lyng in the Padraigs defense were solid all through the game. James Kenneally, Tom Carroll and Kieran Queally were the lone bright stars for a disappointing Na Fianna team.

Team and scorers:
Naomh Padraig: Mike O’Connor, Padraic Mahon, John Lyng, Declan Donnelly, Justin Cummins, Bran Flynn, Brendan Barry, Patrick Lyng (0-1), Liam Headd (0-1), Eddie Brady (2-6), Niall Kenny (2-2), Damian Martin, Michael Gallagher. Subs: Declan Power (0-1), Colman Daly, Alan Coughlan (0-1), Karol Keane, Declan Mahon, Howie Hughes.
