Sean Treacy's Knocked Out
Intermediate Football Championship
Ulster 2-11 Sean Treacy's 1-10

This was a crucial game for Sean Treacy’s who needed a win to stay in contention in the Intermediate football championship. Ulster began with a certain amount of careless play that was giving away frees at an alarming rate. A long range 60 metre ball sent into the Treacy’s goalmouth by Colm White changed course on the way in and slipped through keeper Liam Moloney’s fingers for a goal that put Ulster four points into the lead. Treacy’s replied with a point, and a few minutes later Colm White retaliated for the goal by snatching a high ball out of the air and running in to point blank range from where he blasted a shot into the Ulster net to level the scores.

The points were being racked up by both sides and the scores kept going from a point difference to level to a point difference and back again. There was tough defending at both ends of the field with both teams finding it difficult to get a clear shot. Sean Treacy’s were making a lot of errors and giving away a lot of frees in their full forwards with most of the balls dropping into the goalmouth resulting in free outs.

At half time the sides were level at 1-5 to 1-5.

Treacy’s gained a tailwind in the second half but didn’t make much use of it. For the first fifteen minutes there was but a point scored a piece. Ulster’s quick flowing passing was effective in working the ball up the field but things began to fall apart the closer they got to the goal with a lot of wides being shot.

Ulster finally pushed clear of Treacy’s with a goal by Colm Tulley scored from just outside the box. With five minutes of injury time gone and Ulster three points ahead, Treacy’s were trying desperately to get into goal scoring range. This they succeeded in doing, but with Ulster leaving the other end of the field as sparsely populated as Northern Canada, there were too many yellow shirts for Treacy’s to get through. If Ulster had given away a free then there might have been a chance, but this did not happen and the ball rebounded back down the field unopposed for a final score to seal the game.

Referee: Dodie O’Sullivan, New York
