Championship 2006 - Sunday June 18th Ladies Challenge Game Junior Men’s Football Young Irelanders Emerge as Credible
Force Young Irelanders were on the rampage from the get-go with Treacy’s hassling them vigorously at every turn in this intense game of football at Boxer Stadium. They opened up a gap that Sean Treacy’s came tantalisingly close to closing in the middle of a bit of goal mouth commotion that saw the ball bounce off the posts, off the crossbar, and off a few players before somehow being cleared back down the field. YIs led at that start of the second half by 1-5 to 0-4, a huge improvement on past form this year so far. They ploughed on relentlessly dominating play all over the field, and they could have had a much bigger lead were it not for the number of shots hitting the posts or going wide. Liam Robinson got the YIs' goal number two with a crisp punch into the net, and it was almost reclaimed by Treacy’s a few minutes later only for the ball to roll a few inches wide, one of many near misses. Young Irelanders lost a bit of momentum towards the end as the tired players in the hot conditions couldn’t quite get the accuracy they needed to take the scores, although it has to be said that there was a stiff breeze complicating matters. The final score of 2-10 to 0-7 was a fair reflection of the game, and one that makes this junior championship even more unpredictable than anyone had expected.
