Championship 2006 - Sunday June 25th Men's Football - Sean Treacys 0-7 Shannon Rangers 2-10
Report... Rangers on Cruise
Control Rangers were very much on top for the first ten minutes of this intense game of football at Boxer Stadium, although tight defending by Sean Treacy’s kept their scoring to a minimum. Rangers made the point that they were in charge with a punched goal by Timmy Gorman lobbed over the head of the goalie to put them five points ahead of a Sean Treacy’s side that had yet to score. Treacy’s were shut out for the first fifteen minutes of the game, although their full backs were very good. Rangers were forced to bypass them by shooting from their half-forward line, and with the stiff breeze to contend with, this continued to suppress the Rangers’ lead. Nevertheless, the boys in blue led by 1-4 to 0-4 at half time. Both teams played out of their skins in the second half. Rangers were blasting some excellent shots over the bar, but were soon depleted to twelve men thanks to a double yellow carding. Nevertheless, enough of a lead had been built up to act as a buffer, and Sean Treacy’s were really struggling in the full forwards - they just couldn’t quite get to the ball quickly enough. That said, Treacy’s narrowly missed making a one-point game of it with a shot at goal kicked along the ground only to roll inches wide, but a Rangers goal by Kevin Meaney fired in from inside the box sealed the game with only a few minutes to go. Sean Treacy’s were pushing balls in low to get a goal, but Rangers were bunched into the box to form an impregnable wall that their opponents just could not break through. Referee - Bertie Penny
Short-Staffed Cusack's
Up Against It Jody Ogle fired a blistering shot into the back of the net early on in this game to get Ulster into the swing of things and take charge of the match. Cusack’s barely got a look in as Ulster stretched out a nine point lead by half time. In the second half, Cusack’s got a some crisp shots over the bar, but nowhere near enough of them to come even close to narrowing the gap. It was a scrappy game with a lot of fouling and an unusually high number of cards issued. Cusack’s got some help by the tailwind in the latter part of the game, but they were missing a few key players that would have been badly needed against a team of Ulster’s calibre. Referee - Declan McConn
