Boru Succeed Despite Making Hard
Work of it
Junior Football Championship
Young Irelanders/St Brendan’s 0-13 Sons of Boru 1-14
Boru’s ship set sail promptly in this game as they went 3 points
up, although a lot of their shots had dropped into the goalie’s
hands. Nevertheless, they were coming through the middle of the field
in droves so much that they could afford a few shots falling short.
YIs had to fight hard for every ball and how they managed to get so many
scores is a mystery considering the pressure that the Boru backs were
putting on them. YI/St Brendan’s adapted to the tight defending
and started breaking away and making better use of open space to set up
some clear points and get to within a few points of the leaders.
Boru must have been rattled by the counter-attack because they began
shooting low leading to some wasted opportunities and hair-raising moments
in front of goal.
Boru’s lead had been cut back to a point at half time at 7 points
to 6.
There was no slacking by either side in the second half. YI/SB got onto
a roll and fired over four consecutive points without reply and looked
like they were on their way until Boru rattled the net. Young Irelanders
kept coming, but were undoing a lot of their hard work by conceding frees
and eventually losing a player to a red card. Boru’s four-point
lead was secure to the end.

Fog and Saoirse Put on Fantastic Display of Senior
Football
Ladies Senior Football
Fog City Harps 0-16 Saoirse 0-7
An entertaining first half of this eagerly awaited clash
between 2004 North American Senior champs and 05 Junior champs saw both
defensive units in top form.Free-takers Evelyn Griffin and Ann Morrissey
were to the fore early on as both forward units found the going tough.
A superb 30 min performance by Fog # 6 Monica Jordan, helped by a solid
full-backline meant opportunities were limited for Saoirse.
Fiona Reynolds and her unit were making life just as difficult at the
other end for FCH.
With the score tied at 4 points each 2 fine kicked points from Griffin
and Sharon Edgecombe saw FCH in the ascendancy at the half.
The feature of the second half was the industrious play and top-class
free taking of Evelyn Griffin, who, although lining out at full-forward
seemed to cover every inch inside the 45.The majority of the frees she
converted stemmed from fouls on herself by the backline. Although Saoirse
fought hard throughout the half, the strong breeze helped Fog City to
pull away and record a nine point win.
Best for Fog City were the defensive pair,Monica Jordan and Helen Stephens, while
the outstanding Evelyn Griffin and Marie Kelly impressed upfront.
For Saoirse Fiona Reynolds was brilliant at wing back, helped by Tina
Doss.Upfront Ann Morrisey and Tracy Lynch tried hard.
Referee Declan McConn did a good job throughout a sporting game.
